This month's meeting contained an unexpected addition - the Head of Beccles Free School, accompanied by two of the school's pupils. They spoke about the school, its role and ethos. Members were reminded about the next Group Meeting and the demonstration of belly-dancing which will take place. The speaker this month was Mrs Alker, who told us about the charity work with which she and her husband are involved in Ethiopia. She illustrated her talk with lovely pictures, shot during their stays in the country. She reminded us of the efforts to achieve any education made by the children, with separate morning and afternoon "shifts', so that animal-herding duties can be covered and homework done whilst herding. At the school with which she is involved they feed the children at lunch time, to ensure attendance. Many of the children are AIDS orphans. She also had some amazing pictures of churches hewn from the bed-rock and then elaborately painted inside.
